EarthRanger is the operations platform behind
real-time conservation at more than 900 protected areas: one live map of
tracked wildlife, ranger patrols, vehicles and sensors, built and maintained by
the team at Ai2. In 2024 we joined its engineering team
for a scaling mission
on the backend. This post is about the first front of that mission: separating
reads from writes, so the database that every map refresh and every collar ping
lands on stops being the ceiling on the platform’s growth.
